*Archbishop Cuthbert started a baptistery-mausoleum in 750 but it does not exist today.
*A monastery was also established.
* The archbishop Alphege was taken hostage in 1011 by marauding Danes for ransom. He wouldn't let the church pay the ransom for his safe return so they pelted him to death with oxbones on April 19, 1012. Since he died for the church he became a martyr & a saint. One of the stained glass windows shows his life story.
*Thomas Becket was murdered in the church on December 29, 1170.
*Henry VIII summoned the dead saint to court for treason, when he didn't show up he was found guilty so he took the treasures that were in his coffin. It took 26 carts to haul all of the treasures away.
*The cathedral was damaged by an earthquake in 1382. They lost their bells and campanile.
* They have a total of 21 bells.
